On Becoming a Teacher. By Corey

Working with middle schoolers has been incredible humbling and reflective.

Middle schoolers going through the adolescent period of development are at a crucial point in their social emotional growth that it gives an incredible opportunity for connection.  As much as I have wanted to rip my hair out while teaching middle schoolers technology concepts (which they often know more about than me), I have found such fulfillment in that aha moment with learning and the amazing relationships that I have built.

Nobody remembers math concepts or  social studies concepts they learned but they will never forget connections they have made and the teachers that had a positive impact on their lives.  My goal has been to make true meaningful connections with my students and provide a safe place for all of my students no matter their race, class, gender, or sexual orientation. It fills my cup at the end of the day to think that I might have reached a student that is missing a trusted role model in their lives outside of school. 

I feel so grateful to work in a profession that gives me the opportunity to work with amazing, creative, and bright young minds. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to teach and learn from my students daily even through a global pandemic.
